What are You Resisting?

The AONL Conference in Boston last month was great for connecting with like-minded colleagues and gaining inspiration from thought leaders like Adam Grant, author of Think Again, The Power of Knowing what You Don’t Know. He says our biggest bias is thinking we don’t have bias! Bias creates resistance to change our mindset, which is necessary to learn and grow.

Heather, a nurse manager in the middle of another busy week, was feeling overwhelmed with too many projects, personnel and promises to manage. While she wanted to get home to spend a quiet evening with her family, she recognized her need for recovery in order to show up to be the wife and mom she really wanted to be.

She tentatively called her husband to tell him she needed to workout on her way home and he completely supported her. Her face lit up when she told me, “It was initially a hard decision to make, but that time I took for myself was absolutely magical! Everything seemed possible again! I felt so good and could be more present to my husband and son because I was more present to myself. I am grateful for the daily commitment I make to myself as I continue to learn what well-being means for me”.

Resistance is the struggle you create to stay in your comfort zone. You may think it keeps you safe, but it really keeps you stuck, unable to learn and grow. As nurses, you are resistant to prioritizing yourselves because as caregivers, you are trained and even rewarded to put everyone and everything else first. In the Well-Being Coaching Initiative (WBCI), you learn and experience prioritizing yourself not only helps you feel better, it helps everyone around you, because you show up better.

Here are 5 ways we all experience resistance (aka known as excuses, rationalizations and procrastinations) that keep us stuck in our mindsets:

  1. Busy. I don’t have time for…
  2. Deny. I’m okay…
  3. Minimize. It’s not really that important…
  4. Unworthy. I didn’t get enough done to…
  5. Guilt. I don’t want to disappoint…

The WBCI empowers you to change your mindset to prioritize yourself to make decisions that help you feel good. It is deceivingly simple and surprisingly transformative.

What are you resisting that you could change your mindset about today?
