The Joy of Simplicity

I received the following note after the Kick-Off for the Cone Health Well-Being Coaching Initiative with their Nursing Leadership, 20 Champions and 7 Coaches last month. This beautifully affirms the joy of simplicity that supports us to feel better about ourselves and what we do.

I’m leaning into joy as I prepare dinner with my wonderful daughter. She’s taken charge of seasoning and roasting the turkey and I’m happily focused on the sides, gravy, and curating the table setup. There’s something deeply satisfying about preparing a meal with love and care, knowing it will bring people together.

The process has been both calming and exciting. As I chop, mix, and decorate, I feel a sense of creativity and connection. Sharing this experience with my daughter fills me with warmth and joy. I’m reminded that true joy often comes from simple and meaningful moments—working together, creating something special, and just being present with loved ones.

Can it really be that simple? Yes, I believe it can. Joy is simple, but our busy minds are complicated, so remember these practices to create your own simple and meaningful moments.

1. The Joy of More Meaning
Say yes to the things that matter most to you with full intention and attention.

2. The Joy of Being Open-Hearted
Actively choose how you spend your time and energy with an open heart and mind.

3. The Joy of Presence
Slow down to fully engage in whatever you do because your joy resides in the present.

4. The Joy of Keeping Your Word
Commit yourself to less to feel good more when you keep your word to yourself and everyone else.

5. The Joy of Simplicity
Joy does not always come from promising, doing, or expecting more, but embracing less to cultivate your joy within. It really is that simple.
